This concert brings together three masterpieces of the Romantic era — evocative, passionate, and deeply human — in the historic Musiksaal of Stadtcasino Basel, celebrated for its warm acoustics and refined neoclassical architecture.

  • Bedřich Smetana – Die Moldau (symphonic poem from Má vlast, 1874): A musical journey tracing the Vltava River from its gentle springs in the Bohemian Forest through villages, castles, moonlit dances, and rapids — an orchestral hymn to Czech landscape and identity.
  • Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky – Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23: Bold, lyrical, and virtuosic, the concerto opens with unforgettable chords and unfolds as a dramatic dialogue between soloist and orchestra. Performed by acclaimed pianist Lukas Geniušas.
  • Antonín Dvořák – Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 “From the New World” (1893): Composed during Dvořák’s American sojourn, it fuses Bohemian lyricism with echoes of spirituals and Indigenous rhythms. The iconic Largo movement, later adapted as the spiritual Goin’ Home, conveys profound nostalgia and universal longing.
